Ket : A teacher recently shared a concern with me: she said that there are some students in her classes who really do not understand algebra, and she does not know why. To help them, she wants to know why they do not understand algebra, and what learning approaches or pedagogic practices she might use to help them, rather than being told from test and data records that they do not understand algebra. In essence, the issues at the heart of this concern are those considered in this paper.
